When Kelly Rosenheim attended Santa Barbara Middle School in the early 80s, she had a notion that she might return to work there someday. Fellow student Marco Andrade never really considered it.

South Coast Montessori is highlighting the significance of the Montessori Going Out/Field Trips in the elementary classroom. The trips enhancing children’s education by providing students with hands-on experiences beyond the confines of the classroom.

For primary students at South Coast Montessori (SCM), what began as a simple idea to create class treats transformed into a charitable endeavor, showcasing the young children’s compassion and community spirit.

“There are moments during the morning when the children are engaged with the materials and with each other in such harmony and with so much joy,” said Leah Shannon, Primary Guide at South Coast Montessori.

“Leadership in Montessori is a powerful tool,” explained Melinda Creman, Lead Elementary Guide of South Coast Montessori. In its mixed-age classrooms, older children or those who have dived deeper into certain subjects and lessons, are given the opportunity to guide the less-experienced, often younger, kids in concepts that may be new to them. “Through this method,” Creman said, “students are able to develop strong leadership skills, and those needing support are able to find it in the group.”
